Regenerative medicine relies on the idea that your body can heal itself without help from outside sources. As you age, you tend to lose the ability to regenerate from injury or disease. The research behind regenerative medicine aims to maintain the body's natural healing process by using stem cells and other agents to repair a variety of ailments patients may have.
There are several terms used to discuss treatment processes in regenerative health.
Stem cells—can't carry out specific functions within the body alone. However, they can spread and renew inside the body (unlike many other cells) and learn to become specialized to perform various tasks. For example, they can become muscle cells, blood cells, and brain cells through a process known as differentiation. The newly specialized stem cells develop into the types of cells located in the tissue where the unspecialized parent cells are inserted.
Cytokines—are substances released by certain cells in the immune system that affect other cells. They can also be called growth factors, protein molecules made by the body to regulate cell division and survival.
Chemokines—is a class of cytokines that can attract white blood cells to infection sites to promote healing.
Proteins—are functioning human genes can be inserted into cells to force them to build proteins needed to help in the healing and regenerative process.
Hyaluronic acid—is a substance that naturally occurs in the body but can also be taken as a supplement. It promotes water retention, fights inflammation, and helps lubricate bones.
Regenerative health products that utilize these different substances fall into two categories:
- The first type of human cell and tissue product (HCT/P) is called an autologous product, meaning that it comes from the patient undergoing the treatment.
- The second type is called allogeneic, which is a product sourced from a donor.
The overall goal of regenerative medicine is to skip surgery by allowing the body to fix itself with the natural processes it was born to use. If surgery is necessary, recovery is made easier with regenerative medicine. It is a versatile form of medicine because it can help patients who are aging or injured or others who have developed diseases or are born with congenital disabilities.
